Gapminder
The website GapMinder was created by a Swedish doctor who took data (numbers and statistics) to try to show how the world has changed over time, and what the possibilities are for change in the future. He mostly likes to focus on wealth and health (and how they are often connected). For example, in the last 200 years, life expectancy (how long people live on average, depending where they live) has gone UP around the world as people have also gotten wealthier (better access to jobs/money/opportunity). This is a great website that combines math and social studies, and starts introducing the idea of statistics, which is the idea that you can better understand the world if you know how to read (or visualize) the numbers and facts of our human population.
What Mr. Huisken recommends: 1.Watch this video by Gapminder founder Dr. Hans Rosling, it is 4 minutes 2. If you like his style and the information, go to the website gapminder.org 3. Hit the video link and watch videos that seem interesting! 4. Visit the link "Dollar Street" - this shows you how people around the world LIVE based on their monthly income. Some people live on $31 a month! Your average American family lives on $2000-4000 a month. You can tour their homes and learn about how they live their lives. |
