Unit 5 - Montana History
After Civil War and Reconstruction, 8th Graders will again look west to learn the history of Montana territory and how industry in Montana fit the larger national trend of boom and bust, especially with the advent of the Industrial Revolution back east. Many local themes will be discussed: the timber industry, the growth of Bonner and Missoula, the Salish people; as well as larger state events: the Battle of Little Big Horn, the fur-trappers, the role of women in politics, and the rise of King Copper. Students are encouraged to bring their own family and community stories to school, and to become active historians of their place. For some of this unit, we will be diving into the Bonner archives at the school as well as other places.
