Unit 7 - Ancient Rome
With Alexander the Great's massive military campaign that swept the world, Greek culture spread to and mixed with other cultures. This massive influence of Greek language, thought, and culture is called Hellenism. Out of Hellenism came a civilization similar to Greece: Ancient Rome. The Romans often traced their roots to the Greeks and would go on to create a 1000 year empire (2000 if you count the Byzantine Empire). Rome's dominance over Europe shaped the region for the rest of of its history. The Roman Republic ideals, the Latin language, architectural advancements, trade routes, Christianity, and other major contributions of the Romans continue to impact our world. 6th graders will be studying the rules of the Roman Republic, the fall of the Republic due to Caesar's power grab, the consequences of corrupt leadership, the spread of Christianity, Roman culture (that includes the gladiators), Roman advancements, and the lessons we can learn from Rome's fall.
